If you're anything like me, once you learn this little trick, you'll start looking at every tin can, jar, lid, and random piece of "junk" as your next project.

Today I'm going to show you how to turn an ordinary tin can into a rusty-looking decorative piece using supplies you probably already have at home. The best part? It's inexpensive, easy, and looks surprisingly realistic!

Supplies You'll Need

  • Tin cans (I usually do several at once)

  • Brown paint

  • Yellow paint

  • Orange paint

  • Paint brush or sponge

  • Ground cinnamon

  • Glue, Mod Podge, or a sealer (I used Rethunk Junk Gunk)

Step 1: Paint It Brown

Start by giving your tin can a solid coat of brown paint. This will be your base color.

Let it dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 2: Add Yellow

Using a dry brush or sponge, dab on small amounts of yellow paint. Don't cover the entire can—you want it to look blotchy and uneven.

Let it dry.

Step 3: Add Orange

Next, add orange paint in random areas. Again, don't aim for perfection. Rust forms naturally, so the more random, the better.

Allow it to dry.

Step 4: Add Another Brown Layer

Brush on another light coat of brown paint. While this layer is still wet, sprinkle ground cinnamon over the surface.

The cinnamon adds texture and gives the can that authentic rusty appearance.

Step 5: Seal It

Once everything is completely dry, coat the can with glue, Mod Podge, or your favorite sealer. I used Rethunk Junk Gunk.

This locks everything in place and helps protect your finish.

Finished!

After it dries, your faux rusty can is ready to decorate with! Fill it with flowers, greenery, seasonal picks, paint brushes, craft tools, or use it as part of a rustic centerpiece.

The fun doesn't stop with tin cans, either. This technique works great on:

  • Glass jars

  • Metal lids

  • Vases

  • Wooden cutouts

  • Frames

  • Signs

  • Pretty much anything that needs a little rustic charm

Fair warning: once you make one, you'll start saving everything because you'll be convinced it can become decor. And honestly? You'll probably be right.

Happy crafting! ❤️
