If you’ve never spent a day painting ceramics at CDG Ceramics in Thomson, IL, you're seriously missing out on one of the most relaxing and joy-filled experiences around. Keeping with the trend of granny hobbies, this is one of my absolute favorite places to DIY.

CDG Ceramics & More is owned by the wonderful Gina and Dennis Jordan, and their love for the craft is absolutely contagious. Fun fact: it all started with Gina’s mom, Char, who began what would eventually grow into the colorful, creative haven it is today. And let me tell you—this isn’t just a place to paint; it’s a place to make memories.

Over the years, I’ve painted more ceramic pieces than I can count. We’ve hosted Girl Scout outings, birthday parties, and plenty of spontaneous “just because” visits. The vibe? Super relaxed, no pressure, and always a good time. Gina and Dennis hand pour every piece in the shop, which means you’re not just painting a mug or a gnome—you’re creating art from something handmade with love.

Whether you're a total beginner or a seasoned painter, CDG makes it easy. You can drop in during open paint hours, pick out a piece that speaks to you, and pay a small sitting fee. Some pieces are quick projects, while others take a few visits to finish—but that’s part of the fun!

Need a little help or feeling stuck? Gina is a painting wizard. She’s taught me so many cool techniques that make my pieces look next-level. Seriously, the woman is magic with a paintbrush.

Who knew that the secret to cute snowmen is to paint them blue?

I’ve brought just about everyone I love to CDG: my daughter, my husband, even my aunt who lives eight hours away. There’s something about painting in a cozy studio, chatting over colors and coffee, that makes the whole world slow down in the best way.

So if you're local to northwest Illinois—run, don’t walk, to CDG Ceramics and More. And if you're not? They ship! Or better yet, search for a ceramics studio near you. I promise, it’s the creative escape you didn’t know you needed.
